Blumarine Spring/Summer 2014

A suggestive shoreside scenario is Camilla Akrans’ enchanting vision of the new Blumarine advertising campaign. The photographer captured a feminine Toni Garrn in some of the maison’s key pieces, posing in a fascinating marine setting while surrounded by a flimsy butterfly net.

If only these clothes could talk, the stories they could tell  ... That’s the thought that crossed the mind at Anna Molinari’s Blumarine spring 2014 collection. There certainly seemed to be some fabulously twisted and over-the-top tale brewing behind the scenes (or maybe more accurately behind the seams), a kind of potboiler saga in which innocence is lost, beauty is kept, and richer-than–Croesus wealth is amassed along the way, maybe by the time our heroine is on her third marriage.

By the looks of the transition going on in her collection, Molinari’s heroine started out in virginal white lace, albeit cut in super structured and sexy form, providing the peplum of a zippered fitted jacket, or a hip-hugging pencil skirt. From that point on, the construction fell away to reveal, quite literally, a series of curvaceous sheer lace dresses. After that, perhaps she joined a rock group (or just hung out with one), because we were in full-on I’m With The Band territory, what with the oversize tux jackets and skinny Axl Rose leather pants. The show closed with a series of red-carpet finale dresses which never got too proper; evening looks that suggested her past was catching up with her. Let’s put it like this: If you were sitting beside this gal at a dinner party all night long you’d never be bored, that’s for sure.

There’s always something exuberant and fun about Molinari’s collection, but look beyond it, and you can see that in her own way, her Blumarine is telling the story of the spring season so far: how romanticism can sidle up next to athleticism; how sheer can look soft and also look rather sexual (guess that’s no surprise, given its all about revealing and not concealing); and how lace can be deployed in ways that aren’t so uptight.
